FIINALLY, T-BIRD - AND OTHER COLLECTIBLE CAR OWNERS, can see the light at the end of the tunnel! Tunnel refers to the seemingly endless stretch of winter-months in the Midwest. As a result, the CTCC Calendar now reflects the end of the hibernation, as this issue finds activities, tours and events occupying 4-pages.

Once again, Jim Wilson gives us his comprehensive coverage of the Annual Tech-Session (see pages 6 and 7).

The Cover Photo captures the mood of the many members who participated in this year's well-attended event! Thanks to Ken Smizinski and Bob Wenderski for combining forces to stage the informative session. Note that Sue Wenderski gets the credit for snapping the great picture!

The Volo Auto Museum Shelby-Cobra-Mustang-T-Bird Ford Show is set for Sunday, August 7th. The event particulars are presented on page . This annual event showcases Ford vehicles (including Shelby replicas), so the opportunity to see so many Ford-powered cars on display at one location makes it well worth the price of admission! Don't miss this Special Show! The CTCC Spring Tour gets underway as we approach press time. Look for coverage - and photos - of the event in the July issue.

With the unprecedented rise in the cost of gasoline, it may surprise you to learn the prevailing prices that existed in 1970. Check out the Yesteryear item that is presented on page 10!

WITH THE SIGHTING OF THE FIRST ROBIN BEHlND US, we consider this to be a most reliable harbinger of Spring!

The first driving event of the year is the Tech-Session on April 30th. See page 10 for the details, and RSVP before the deadline April 25": Registration is limited so contact Bob Wenderski ASAP

The CTCC Calendar is updated to show two new events: Joel and Annie have arraigned for a change-of-pace outing for July. While the date hasn't been firmed up, it will probably be the 23rd or 30th. Tour details are presented on page 3. Having attended the 'show' some years ago, I can attest to its being a most interesting and exciting adventure! Joel plans to have the date secured in time to publish in the May issue.

• The Volo Shelby Ford Show is set for August 7th. This annual event showcases Ford vehicles (including Shelby replicas), so the opportunity to see so many cars on display makes it well worth the price of admission.

The risque(?) Pin-Up photo (page 7), was submitted by my #1 son, his ever-watchful eye spotting things related to the classic Thunderbirds! Strangely enough, my son saw an ad for a '57 T-Bird in a 1970 issue of Hot-Rod, resulting in a trip to California to purchase the T-Bird! The cost of the airline ticket (Standby) was something on the order of $65.00!

The Cover Photo is one of several submitted to CTCC by Mitch Frumkin in 2005.

WITH WINTER HAVING CLEARLY MADE ITSELF KNOWN, we face the prospect of a long hibernation for the classic T-Birds. Meanwhile, we can look forward to the inviting schedule designed for our Spring Tour. The detailed plans are included in this issue - refer to pages 6 and 8 and save the dates. In the meanwhile, check out the activities for this month (Pizza Party), March (Meeting and Election of three Directors), and April (the Tech-Session.)

The Calendar contains two revised dates: The Tech-Session will be held on April, 30th and the Poplar Grove Hangar Event, hosted by member, Ken Kresmery, is set for Sunday, August.21st.

The CTCC Board is considering an invitation for CTCC to join a group, including the Shelby Club, that holds an event at the Volo Museum facility ever year. Look for more info next month.

Be sure to check out the Barrett-Jackson Auction T-Bird sales report on page 9.

It may seem a bit odd to read a dissertation about T-Bird Air-Conditioning in midwinter, however, the article on page 9 is a reminder that summer will arrive - in due time.

Next month, we will feature coverage of the CTCC Brunch and Play event that was held at Drury Lane Theatre on January 30th.

The December Treasurer's Report, which was inadvertently omitted in the January issue of BIRD-NEWS, is printed in this issue - see page 4.

THE FIRST MENTION OF SNOW IN THE WEATHER REPORT didn't stop Tom and Judy Bruin from providing us with an inviting schedule for the Spring Tour- Pg. 7.

The (tentative) CTCC Calendar for 2011 provides a glimpse of things-to-come for our membership. Be sure to check out the January Brunch/Play event that is detailed on page 9. Make your Reservations!

The approach of WINTER signals time for a review of storage for the T-Birds, as well as other collectibles. See page 6 for two (2) Guides.

This issue includes two nostalgic items: The (ca. 1980) Ad (pg. 10) presented the ill-fated replica at $25,000, with a $1000 deposit! The Saturday Evening Post excerpt (page 3) pays tribute to the T-Bird.

Liz Werth reports the successful recovery of photos and info on her computer! The lesson: Make sure you have a working BACKUP!

The Electronic distribution of BIRD-NEWS- send us your e-mail.

This B-N will be late; Tom, at VCB, has undergone back surgery.

THE FIRST FULL-DAY OF FALL PRODUCED A TANTALIZING temperature of 89 degrees! Reality set in very soon thereafter, dashing any hopes for the 80's.

The CTCC Calendar provides a realistic view, as we prepare for the last road-trip of the year. Len and Mary Keil have planned a tour to Cedarburg, Wl on Sunday, Oct. 17m. [See Schedule on page 3.]

Early reports on the Fall Tour indicate that good weather prevailed! Look for the story by Karen Kelly in the November issue.

A delegation of CTCC members greeted the members of the Puget Sound Early Birds upon their arrival here on September 23rd. Coverage of the event appears on page 9, the highlight being our dinner at the fabled Del Rhea's Chicken Basket on the old Rte. 66!

Liz Werth has recently encountered the dreaded computer CRASH, so she is in urgent need of any photos you have from 2010 Club events/Tours, etc. These form the year-in-Review Program content for the Nov. meeting. Contact Liz at: CTCCpictures@aol.com.

THE CTCC CALENDAR SHIFTS INTO HIGH GEAR FOR JUNE with the Membership Meeting (10th), the CTCI Convention (15-20) and the Special One-Day Spring Tour Outing on the 27th. (See pg. 10 for Tour.) Speaking of Tours, see page 4 for an Update on the Fall Tour (September 17-20).

If you are signed up to join the CTCC Caravan to Dayton, see the item on page 6 - Dayton Bound Caravan Info. As of press-time, Len Keil adds that each of you who are traveling with the group will also receive the Schedule directly.

An amazing story is presented on page 9: The photo of a fighter plane's near-perfect landing.... sans a pilot! The F-106 is on permanent display at the Wright Patterson AFB Museum. Thanks to Rudy Budach, Convention attendees will have a preview look!

Under the heading of Club News, we can report that Bob Hoge has resigned as Treasurer, while Doug Rogers reprises his role as our Treasurer! (Bob will remain on the Board.)

THE CALENDAR INDICATES NO SCHEDULED EVENT for the month of May, however, the Meeting on June 10th signals the start of a very busy summer!

If you are planning to join the CTCC Caravan to Dayton, see the item on pg. 6 and contact Len Keil.

The response to the April Cover Photo QUIZ is presented on page 7 along with some additional info.

The second Photo Quiz (page 7 in the April issue) drew interesting comments from two of our members (see pg. 3), while EARLY BIRD Editor, Lin Somsak, found the challenge to be a bit 'tricky' based on the fact that she and Bill own a retractable! Lin and Perry Anthony spotted the deceit, however. Perry amassed quite a list!

Member, Joe Kahn, sheds some additional light on the mysterious Tucker Convertible that was pictured on page 6 of the April issue. It is the car with 'no Birth Certificate' (see Joe's story on page 6).

An update on the CTCC Fall Tour planning is presented on pg. 8.

THE SIGHTING OF THE FIRST ROBIN - ON MARCH 9th - held promise for the early arrival of spring weather! These hopes were dashed by ... SNOW!

The story - and photos - covering the very successful Breakfast Meeting is featured on pg.3. We thank Jim Wilson and Liz Werth for the coverage.

Eagle-eyed readers will no doubt be interested in learning the correct identification of the racecar pictured on the cover of this month's issue. Stay tuned for the ANSWER next month.
The March Membership Meeting Election found Doug Rogers returning as a member of the Board. Thanks to Pete Ekstrom for his past service as a member of the CTCC Board of Directors.

Shade tree mechanics won't want to miss the CTCC Tech-Session set for Saturday, April 24th! See page for the complete schedule and make your RESERVATIONS with Bob Wenderski - today.

A second "T-Bird QUIZ" appears on page 7. This should prove to be an interesting challenge! (Thanks to Joe Kraatz for the item .)

THE CTCC CALENDAR FOR 2010 HAS BEEN FINE-
tuned since the publication of the February issue of B-N. The HOT DOG & BRATS GALA event date has been changed to July 17th. The revised dates for the Fall Tour: September 17-20.

This issue marks the first in the 49th year of publication for BIRD-NEWS. So, Happy Birthday to B-N as we head for 50!

See page 5 for updated info on the SPECIAL Breakfast meeting: Are You Convention Bound? This is a MUST for your Concours entry.

The featured item for this month is the March 1954 Chrysler Report on the design parameters and specifications for the 1955 T-Bird. The material, reduced from 10-pages (8 1/2x 11"), is on pages 8-10.

See page 4 for PREVIEW information on the CTCC Tech Session.

CTCC has donated $500 to the Dayton Convention. In addition, a member has anonymously donated $250, making the total $750!

Our best wishes for a speedy recovery to Karen Kelly who is now at home, following her recent surgery.

THE CTCC CALENDAR FOR 2010 HAS BEEN FINE-tuned since the publication of the January issue of B-N. The HANGAR event date (August 22), has been confirmed by our host, member, Ken Kresmery. The revised date for the ONE-DAY Spring Tour is June 27th since Bob Hoge has learned that the Park site is not open in May. A SPECIAL meeting has been set-up for those members who are planning to enter a 'Bird in the CTCI International Concours competition. Details are presented on page 5. Are You Convention Bound? (A good introduction to one of the main items to be discussed appears on page 18 of the Jan./Feb. issue of EARLY BIRD magazine.) Check it out.

Speaking of the Convention, your room reservations should be made as soon as possible! Some rooms are already sold-out.

The January B-N list of contributors to our Holiday Party gift list (page 7) omitted the following firm: SURF CITY GARAGE - 5872 Engineer Drive, Huntington Beach, CA. We appreciate their help.

AS THE NEW YEAR SWIFTLY APPROACHES, IT'S TIME
to extend a note of appreciation to the many
members who supplied articles, news items,
photos and help during 2009! Again, we are
indebted to Bob Hoge and the Valley
Community Bank for underwriting the color-
printing cost of BIRD-NEWS. Bob's support also
extends to our Holiday Party, where we receive
a VCB squeeze flashlight. Bob also contracts for our Party
entertainment, provided by accordionist, Elmer Lange!

The arrival of 2010 also means that it is CTCC DUES RENEWAL time!

Our Feature for this month is the rarely seen Right-Hand Drive
Thunderbird (Cover photo). (See pages 7-9).

It appears that we will have a good turnout for the special Brunch/Magic Show on January 10th. Next, the popular Pizza Party event in February finds us enjoying FREE pizzas at Jake's Pizza on the 11th. (See page 10 for detailed information.)

WISHING YOU A HAPPY NEW YEAR!

WITH PRESS-TIME NIPPING AT MY HEELS. IT WAS A SAD REMINDER OF THINGS TO come, when snowplows roared down the road! The light dusting of snow didn't warrant any actual "plowing," so I trust this was merely a training exercise.....

The 2009 Calendar (page 2) shows our Annual holiday Party as the last event scheduled for this year. It also signals time for CTCC DUES Renewals. Membership Chair Madline Zambon, has already sent out the Renewal Forms for 2010, so get your check in the mail.

The (tentative) 2010 CTCC Calendar appears on page 3.

While Fall 2010 is still far in the future, Pete and marylu Kramer have prepared advance notice for the Annual CTCC Fall Tour. (Refer to PLAN AHEAD on page 9).

The first outing scheduled for the New Year is the special Brunch/Magic Show on Sunday, January 10th (See page 10 for details and RESERVATIONS/PRE PAYMENT.)

An interesting modification to a '55 T-Bird is pictured on page 9! The 1955 Ford advertisement shown on page 6 is a bit different from most other period layouts. My file copy doesn't reveal the publication source- or date of release.

The Rear Cover design includes the familiar "T-Bird Santa" Christmas Tree ornament, while the three "Birds and Sleigh panel is based on a design I developed several years ago. The TARTC Dec. 2009 Newsletter utilized this layout- adding color to the T-Birds.

WITH THE OFFICIAL ARRIVAL OF FALL, IT SIGNALS THE time for the CTCC Fall Tour to take wing - Oct. 2nd - 4th. Look for the story and photos in the November issue! The CTCC Election of Officers found the incumbents retaining their posts, as there were no nominations made from the floor. See page 6 for Bill Werth's photograph of the (smiling) group!

Photo- CTCC Officers for 2010- Standing: Pete Kramer- Vice President, Len Keil- President. Seated: Liz Werth - Secretary, Bob Hoge- Treasurer

Having been involved with the Meadowdale Race facility during its hey day, I have devoted a page to the 50th Anniversary of the now abandoned road course. See page 3 for the memories. The shrinking CTCC Calendar reflects the fact that "T-Bird Season" is fast disappearing! The November 12th Meeting will feature a photo review of the 2009 activities to-date, a Power-Point production by Liz Werth. Also, voting for the BERT EISENHOUR AWARD for 2009 is on the agenda, with the presentation scheduled for the Holiday Party in Dec.

We have learned that long-time member. Pat Giffin, has recently suffered some health issues, but we are happy to report that he is now at home during his recovery.

While the Calendar (page 2) now includes a reminder for CTCI members to plan for the International Convention in June of 2010, it is not too early to start preparing T-Birds for the Concours event! The relatively close proximity of the Convention should encourage a good turnout from our CTCC membership. Check EARLY BIRD for detailed info.

Speaking of 2010, the CTCC Board has decided to eliminate the Spring Tour from our schedule, since the International Convention will attract so many of our members.

IN SPITE OF ITS TRANSITORY BEAUTY, THE SNOW, WHICH GREETED US ON the morning of April 6th was most depressing to any owner of a collector car whose destiny is to live in the Midwest! While the dialogue for the lower picture on page 3 is mine, the facts remain: The driver was unaware of his extra "passenger" and he didn't suspect any problem - until his engine began over-heating!

The Mustang coverage on page 6 is included in this issue, since Bob Fria is a former member of CTCC. His # 1 Hardtop was featured at the Ford Centennial in 2003.

Thanks to Pete and Marylu Kramer, we will enjoy a Brunch/Meeting at their home on Sunday. June 14th. Details and directions appear on page 7. Mark the special date on your Calendar!

While the Air-Conditioning treatise (page 8) is quite obviously "tongue-in-cheek" (with the possible exception of #3), it is most interesting to note that photo #2 was submitted by the Elgin Police Department! We have a Redneck living in the Chicago suburbs? Page 9 features another edition of License Plates With a Message, thanks to Annie Luginbill! Thanks to Ken and Polly Kresmery, CTCC members are again invited to attend their super event - Day at the Hangar - on Sunday, August 23rd! Members attending last year's (13th Annual edition) reported having a marvelous time - plus a selection of excellent food-fare! COVER: (last para.): Should read ...... smaller 14" tires. AS SPRING MAKES ITS OFFICIAL 2009 ENTRANCE, WE DO SEE some encouraging signs that will put our T-Birds back on-the-road! Moderating temperatures and no road-salt give us hope. Our hard-working Webmaster, Joel Greenberg, has indicated that he will be listing the routing for the Spring Tour about one-week prior to the event. If you are signed up for the Tour, be sure to check out the CTCC Website in advance of the departure date - May 1st.

As mentioned in this column last month, e-mail from member, Dave Zornig, mentioned the fact that he had found a brochure covering one of the several attempts to market Replicas! It was this note (in 2008) that spurred my interest in a 'review' of the efforts by six different firms. The information is presented on pages 9 and 10 of this issue.

The picture of the Pavlak's Studebaker Hawk (page 6) was taken at the CCCA Car Show at Oak Brook Shopping Center on Father's Day, last June. The Greater Illinois Region of the CCCA annual display of approximately 100 cars is a major fund-raiser for the Club.

The rear-cover photo was received at press-time, so details of the special T-Bird event will be published in the May issue. Perry Anthony reports that the outing found 33 members of their Smoky Mountain Club enjoying the Terry Evanswood Magic Show and party!

Will you and your T-Bird be traveling the Illinois Highways before April1st?

AS WINTER MAINTAINS ITS ICY AND SNOWY GRIP ON THE MIDWEST, we anxiously await the sign of the first returning Spring robin!

Meanwhile, we turn our attention to the CTCC Calendar [pg. 2] for the New Year. Please note an important change for the June Meeting: Thanks to the Kramers, our Meeting will be at their home in Hinsdale on Sunday. June 14th. Look for directions/info for the Brunch Meeting (which will start at 11:45 a.m.) in a future issue. Save the date.

Thanks to Ken and Polly Kresmery, CTCC members are once again invited to attend their Annual Day at the Hangar event! (For a PREVIEW of the many unique attractions available, refer to page 8 of the July, 2008 issue of Bird News.) Plan to be there!

As you will note from the cover, this marks the first issue in our 48th year of publication! The cover photo, from the Thunderbird Anthology CD, is quite obviously from the (early) Ford files. A close look at the top of the fenders reveals the beginnings of a Fairlane trim-stripe! The Ford ad that is featured on page 6 appeared in November, 1954 issue of HOLIDAY MAGAZINE. Bob Burgess, a member of TARTC, noted the following when the ad was reproduced in Little Bird Talk some time back: "... at least two ads were released showing the stainless steel stripe. A similar ad appeared in the Oct. 23-1954 issue of The Saturday Evening Post."

Inspired by a 2008 e-mail from Dave Zornig, the back-cover shows one of the Replica 'Birds.

AS MOST OF YOU ALREADY KNOW, T-BIRD HISTORY WAS MADE IN Scottsdale, Arizona when the Barrett-Jackson Auction gavel fell at $600,000 for the First Production 1955 Ford Thunderbird! See page 9 for the story on this historic landmark for the S/N 100005 T-Bird.

The CTCC event for February - the Annual Pizza Party and Meeting -is one of the best-attended outings, year after year! Could it be that the FREE Pizza motivates us to brave the bone-chilling WlNTER COLD? In any case, mark your calendar for Thursday, Feb. 12th and plan to join us! See page 10 for Directions; Bob Hoge will present the 2009 Budget.

The Cover Photo this month features the storied BATTLEBIRD, #98 being one of two all-out race-cars commissioned by the Ford Motor Company. The photo is from one of the many featured in The ThunderbIrd Anthology CD. CTCI member, Gil Baumgartner, was instrumental in providing the meticulous attention to detail in the restoration of this particular 'Bird. Gil is the Authenticity Co-Chairman for CTCI, a position that eminently qualified him for this unique restoration task.

We suspect that Liz Werth, our Region 2 Director, is by now packing for the trip to California to attend the CTCI Annual Board-of-Director's Meeting! Of course. Bill will also be flying west, in anticipation of finding some sunny - and warm - days to break our Midwest cold spell!

A DUES reminder is included on page 10, so take time to mail your check. By doing so, you will ensure receiving your future issues of B-N.

While not complete, the 2009 CTCC Calendar is presented in tentative form - see page 2. Note the item on the January 16th event that appears on page 3. Also, note the corrected date for the Pizza Party/Meeting: Thursday, February 12th. CTCC provides the PIZZA!

With the New Year upon us, it is time for this column to extend a sincere note of appreciation to the countless members who have contributed stories, articles and photos to B-N during 2008! A special mention for Liz Werth who has submitted event photos and prepared layouts - such as the Holiday Party announcement that appeared on page 10 of the November 2008 issue.

Anticipating a milestone auction selling price for the "005" 1955 Thunderbird owned by the late George Watts, all eyes will be on the Barrett-Jackson Auction in Scottsdale this month. The story of the "Number 1 Production T-Bird" is outlined on page 9. What will the No Reserve $$ be?

Sadly, 2008 marked the passing of Joan Mrozek and Bernice Kuxhause and CTC! member Lois Eminger. We also noted the untimely loss of Chuck Maddox III, a former member of CTCC.

WITH SNOW HAVING MADE ITS PRESENCE KNOWN, IT SEEMS ONLY natural that our thoughts now turn to indoor activities and/or events. The Annual Holiday Party (Dec. 6fh) leads into the first outing for the New Year: Pete and Marylu Kramer have set plans for CTCC to join in on the festivities at the Willowbrook Ballroom on Friday, Jan. 16th. See pg. 3 for details on the Winter Dance Party.

SIDE-BAR: The Chicagoland Thunderbirds will be celebrating their Christmas Party at Chandler's on December 6th! Their members will also be attending the Willowbrook event on (you guessed it!) Jan. 16th.

Speaking of the calendar for 2009 events, you will note that the ever-popular (FREE!) Pizza Party date is indicated as "Tentative." Group reservations at Jake's will be made in January.

With the busy summer schedule filling all available space with stories and photos, the long-delayed Part 2 of 'The True Story......" is finally published - refer to pages 9 and 10. (Part 1 was featured in the August '08 issue of BIRD-NEWS - see pages 6 and 7.) The "behind-the-scenes" article is most definitely worthwhile reading, adding still another chapter to T-Bird history.

The photo coverage of The Longest Auto Race (LAR) stopover in Geneva, Illinois (page 7) presents a look at the wide variety of vehicles participating in the New York to San Francisco portion of the 1908 Great Race! Since entrants in the 1908 New York to Paris Race did make astop in Geneva, it was great to visit with the intrepid crews involved in the "recreation" oftheU.S. segment of the historic event!

WITH SNOW ALREADY BEING MENTIONED IN OUR WEATHER REPORTS, THE MESSAGE IS CLEAR: our T-BIRDS are headed for their long winter hibernation!
A glance at the CTCC Calendar (page 2) reveals only two events remaining on the 2008 schedule: The November Membership Meeting at Russell's BBQ on the 13th and the Annual Holiday Party on December 6th.
As you will see, this issue is devoted to coverage of the CTCC Fall Tour, with a splendid recount of the event by Sandy Kraatz (pages 6, 7 and 8) and photos by Bill Thelen (page 9). Blessed with picture-perfect weather on both Friday and Saturday, the well-attended Wisconsin Tour was most enjoyable!
Incidentally, the October 7th edition of the BELOIT DAILY EXPRESS featured our event on the cover page of their Living section! The page also included two color photos: Your Editor and Pete Ekstrom with Pete's Fiesta Red '56 and a view of the 'Birds lined up in the parking lot of the Beloit Angels Museum.
Again, due to limited space in this issue, Part II of "The True Story...." will appear in the Dec. issue.
As of press-time, the small group of the travelers recreating the LAR (Longest Auto Race) arrived in Geneva, Illinois on the 23rd. Since Geneva was one of the stops made by the New York to Paris Great Race cars in 1908. this was an important part of the current Racer's routing in their travels from New York City to San Francisco - October 18 - November 8. The cover of the October 24th edition of the Daily Herald features coverage of the visit, along with a photo of us "interviewing'' Roy Foster, one of the drivers. We will feature more "Race Car photographs in the December issue, [longestautoracecent.com].
A recent WLS radio program found the host, Paul Bryan, expounding on the present market for collector cars. The Las Vegas Auction saw a 1955 T-Bird sell at $50,000, Paul commenting that the 'Bird would have been valued at "double" that amount last year!

WISHING ONE-AND-ALL A HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
